Sourcing Guide

Polo Shirt Packaging & Label Options for Private Label Programs

Labels and packaging are where a manufactured shirt becomes a branded product. Each option has unit cost, setup cost and minimum quantity attached — this guide maps the menu so a launch order does not pay for volume-season hardware.

Neck and brand labels

  • Woven damask label — the premium default; crisp text and edges, but weaving minimums apply.
  • Printed satin label — lower minimums and cost, softer hand, slightly less premium perception.
  • Tagless heat transfer — no scratch, low launch MOQ, modern retail look; artwork must be print-ready.
  • Hem tab / side-seam label — secondary brand signature without changing the neck.

Information and hang tags

Size labels, UPC/barcode stickers, price tickets and content tags integrate into one tagging plan. Hang tags come in standard card, folded/printed, recycled kraft and premium multi-piece sets with string/lock choices. Tag printing has its own minimums — factor them in at MOQ planning.

Inner finishing

Neck tape color, printed inside yokes, collar stays, hang points and tissue paper are low-cost interior signals buyers encounter when unboxing — disproportionately remembered in unboxing-heavy e-commerce.

Individual packing

Cartons and shipping packing

Standard export cartons, double-wall for heavy assortments, palletized or floor-loaded per forwarder requirement. Provide carton marks, SKU/ratio labels and store/3PL assortment lists. Hanger shipments (garment-on-hanger in hanging containers) suit retail programs that skip distribution-center processing.

Retail routing-guide compliance

Major retailers and marketplaces issue packaging manuals: fold dimensions, polybag thickness and suffocation warnings, barcode placement, ticket formats and carton label layouts. Pass the routing guide with the PO; packing is inspected against it and non-compliance creates chargebacks regardless of garment quality.

Staging the spend across orders

  1. Launch: tagless transfer or small-run printed labels, stock hang tags or none, plain polybags, standard cartons.
  2. Growth: woven labels, printed tags and polybags, folding boards, barcode labels.
  3. Volume/premium: damask label sets, multi-piece tags, gift packing, hangers, custom carton marks.

For the legal text printed on those labels, see care label compliance; for the full customization surface, see private label polo shirts.

Detail checklist for the PO

  • Label artwork files, positions and attachment methods
  • Tag set composition, string type and placement point
  • Fold dimensions, board/tissue, polybag size/thickness/warnings
  • SKU labeling, barcode standards, price-ticket fields
  • Carton size, assortment ratios, marks and pallet requirements
